The Gospel of Luke, Chapter 2: Today's chapter moves quickly! It starts with the birth of Jesus and by the end of the chapter Jesus is 12 years old and teaching in the Temple! We actually don't know much about the childhood of Jesus. Was he a curious child? Was he rowdy? Was he athletic? Was he sociable? We don't know. This chapter of Luke gives us one of the few stories that we have of Jesus' childhood. We hear of him being taken to the Temple as a young child to be Purified and given to God as all first born male children were. We also hear the story of Jesus staying behind in Jerusalem to learn and teach at the Temple even though his parents we're aware of what he was doing. They had to come back and find him! Prayer: God, help us to honor our parents and those who acted as our parents in our lives. May we bless them as they have blessed us. Amen.
Reading Luke Chapter 1: Today's scripture covers the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth who were very old, but who became the parents of John the Baptist. The chapter then covers Mary's conception and her visit to Elizabeth when both of them were pregnant. John the Baptist was to be the prophet that prepared the world for the coming of Jesus, God's son. How amazing is it that God can work through ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things when we are willing and open to God in our lives! Prayer: God, help us to hear your voice and to know you even more that we may be formed in your way. Amen.
These next 30 days I am inviting anyone that would join me to participate in a 30 (ish) day scripture challenge. I plan to read 1 chapter of the Gospel of Luke until February 13 (Ash Wednesday). I'll begin at chapter 1 and when I get to the end I'll begin again. I'll post comments each day here. Will you join me?
